Blade Runner (1982, Ridley Scott)

No, I’m sorry, this “classic” did nothing for me. Maybe my expectations were too high, maybe I simply waited too long to see it. It felt very messy and the main arguments and ideas were not presented very clearly.
I did enjoy the dystopian future and it’s hard to argue that it’s influential and has had quite an impact on certain aspects of movie-making and how we view science fiction, but it all felt so “minor”, so boring, and so very pointless. It’s been a long time since I was this disappointed in a movie, and even longer since I was so confused.
Rutger Hauer is at least a little bit interesting to watch, but Harrison Ford looked as bored as I felt.
That all said, I’m willing to give it a second chance. Maybe I’ll try the original cut or wait until Scott releases his new Final Cut. Here’s hoping it’ll be less disheartening a second time.

I agree that it was all a little boring in some places, and that it got really artsy-fartsy in some others, but it was certainly groundbreaking when it was made. Sure, we’re really spoiled when it comes to thrillers nowadays (hey, is there any real plot twist we don’t see coming?), but putting it in perspective that this movie is from 1982, it has great special effects and visuals.
It’s been a long time since I last saw it, but I thought it was anything but boring.
Like I said, I am aware of the impact it made in 1982, and I respect it for what it has accomplished. Maybe I just waited too long to see it, or my expectations were too high. I do intend to watch it again some day though.
I’ll do the same. I think last time I saw it was maybe 12 years ago. That was even before my serious cinephilia began
Maybe that will change my look on things…
