A Christmas Story (1983, Bob Clark)

A Christmas Story

I am told that this, along with It’s a Wonderful Life, is the movie that gets played most during the holiday season on American TV. Meanwhile, it’s not even available on DVD in Europe. It made me wonder if this was going to be a very American story, and the powers that be didn’t think it would appeal to European audiences.

It wasn’t. Right from the start, I experienced that great feeling of familiarity. I was transported back in time, remembering what Christmas was like as a kid. Pretty much every little thing Ralphie goes through was stuff I experienced when I was that age, and it all just kinda came back to me.

There are several absolutely classic moments in this movie, and a fair few crack-your-ribs hilarious moments. I can definitely see why this movie is so well-liked, and I think that if I had seen this as a kid, it probably would have been my favourite movie ever. Thumbs up.
