Alphabet Project

For my next project, I’m taking a page out of Will’s book (thanks, pal) and introducing the Alphabet Project. I enjoyed reading Will’s reviews of all the movies he chose, but most of all I enjoyed the variety of movies he included and the unpredictability of his choices.

So, to decide the movies, I am gonna open this up to a public vote. Post your comment below as to what my next alphabet movie will be.

Criteria: I can’t have already seen them, and they can’t be too mainstream. Otherwise, it’s fair game. By all means suggest movies from any country, any era, and any genre. I’ll consider all your suggestions.

  1. I’ve now opened comments on all “List” pages, so feel free to add movie suggestions here.

  2. I had to update the polling system to get rid of the “Add an answer” option, which was causing problems (apparently primarily to IE users).

Can you all please vote again?

  3. Already voted for Commando (I plan to have it on next year’s Resolution list) and Do the Right Thing (a great Spike Lee film you should see if you haven’t already), but some other write-ins (if you haven’t seen them) are Central do Brasil (saw it on my Circumcinemavigation), Days of Wine and Roses (which I expect you’ve seen, but if not you should) and Drop Dead Gorgeous (an odd film with some good moments).

  4. I’d watch any of the other E’s 10 times before watching Eraserhead again.

  5. Heh, Gren has hijacked knarf’s account.

  6. For the letter E, I’m gonna go with Europa ‘51. Best. Ingrid. Ever. Also, I’m pretty sure you’d love it.

As far as the letter F goes, definetely Le Fils, by the Dardennes. I’m not so sure you’d like it though, even being their masterpiece. I know you’ve seen their latest, L’Enfant, but I can’t remember if you liked it or not. It may be worth mentioning that I’ve not seen any of the F movies on the poll.

  7. Hmm… how can I italicize properly?

  8. To do that, you have to use HTML tags and not BBC tags (used for message boards). I’ve fixed your comment above and added in a note at the start of the comment box to help you out in the future.

  9. Europa ‘51 sounds great, but unfortunately it’s not available to me on DVD.

And I thought L’Enfant was good, not great (typical three star movie). I did manage to find Le Fils available to me though, so I’m definitely gonna check that out. Whether or not I make it my F movie for the Project or not remains to be seen.

  10. No Europa ‘51? Boo.

Ok, The Elephant Man, then. Will vote.

  11. Not to clutter this with non-related stuff, but I don’t know where else to post it (you can always delete it later).

I tried to rate the movies again, but some of them are literally unrateable. What I mean is, it tells me “you’ve already rated this movie” (which I have, in the past), despite the fact that it clearly says there are “zero votes”.

    Help.

  12. Which movies does that apply to? I can see you have voted for the following movies today: Blade Runner, Grave of the Fireflies, Aguirre: The Wrath of God, Frankenstein, The Lives of Others, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, La Dolce Vita, The Apartment, Amadeus, American Graffiti, Commando.

So, 11 ratings. What others are you trying to rate?

  13. Uh… I don’t know if you did anything, but it seems to be working now.

    Woo.

  14. Your ‘G’ picks suck. Il Gattopardo is the correct answer. Alternatively, Germania anno zero. No, I am not Italian.

As far as ‘H’ goes, just watch A History of Violence again
No? Ok, Husbands and Wives then.

  15. You need a place where people can make general comments (i.e. stuff that’s not necessarily related to any of what you’ve posted).

So what are you planning on watching at the festival? I expect a full report.

  16. I’ll set up a page for comments. Or possibly some sort of mini-forum. Stay tuned.

At the Stockholm Film Festival, I have tickets for the following:
    Rocket Science
    Juno
    The Assassination of Jesse James…
    The Darjeeling Limited
    Once
    No Country for Old Men

Plus one “surprise film”; won’t find out what that is until I’m seated in the theatre next Wednesday.

There was so much to choose from (170 films, I believe), but most were on at the same time as other stuff I wanted to see, or during the daytime. I might try to squeeze something else in if I can.
